The police had been unable to trace any living relative of the girl who had died on the staircase, though they had known of her late father, of course. There had been an inquest, naturally, and several of the students who had shared the coach trip with her had been called. They were able to add very little to the story of the loner who had hung around Glamis all the time. Except for Ollie, who had had a field day.

“I believe she had met a secret child,” he announced importantly.

“Why do you say that?” inquired the coroner.

“Because she was talking about it at dinner the night before she died. It might even have been her own.”

The coroner answered mildly enough, “This woman had had no children, according to the doctor’s report.”

“Then it must have been someone she met. Possibly another tourist.”

The coroner wearily thought that Ollie’s type were always a nuisance at inquests, always coming up with totally irrelevant facts.

“Glamis Castle gets a great multitude of visitors,” he answered drily, “many of whom the late young woman could have spoken to. And, of course, there is always the Monster lurking about.”

He smiled to himself thinly when there was subdued but prolonged laughter in the court room. And some miles away, two little windows gleamed bright as diamonds in the high tower of Glamis Castle.
